MATTRESS CARE
Taking care of your mattress properly can help extend its life
If you have purchased a new mattress you will want to look after it to protect your investment. By following a few simple tips you can keep your mattress in top condition, and get years of comfort and restful sleep.
When your mattress is delivered
The mattress has been constructed to give you the right level of support and comfort, but to get it from the factory to you, it has had to be wrapped and moved, perhaps more than once. When it gets to your house, you should take off all the wrapping. Once you remove your new mattress from its packaging, leave it uncovered for a few hours to allow it to air.
You should also give some time for your mattress filling to settle. When you first start using your new mattress, it will probably feel a bit different from your old one, so please allow time for your body to adjust to the new level of comfort and support.
Use a mattress protector
Invest in a mattress protector to protect your mattress from stains and to reduce the likelihood of airborne allergens from dust mites which can save you money in the long run. It is one of the best ways to keep the upholstery of your mattress in good condition, as this will protect the mattress from spills and contact with body moisture. Use a clean damp cloth for light cleaning, allowing the mattress to thoroughly dry afterwards. Avoid using detergents or chemical cleaners as this may damage the fabric and stitching. Put your mattress protector on once your mattress has been unwrapped and aired.
Rotate your mattress
It is normal for your mattress to settle during use as most people sleep in the same position every night. Certain parts of your mattress will settle quicker and more than others in response to the areas where your body weight is more pronounced. If your mattress requires turning, don't forget to turn it regularly also rotate your mattress head to foot every 2 weeks for the first 3 months, then every 3 months thereafter. Turning and rotating can minimise the effect of the settlement.
Vacuum your mattress
Leave your mattress to air for at least half an hour, and vacuum it every month or so, being particularly careful around quilting and tufting so that you don't damage the outer surface of your mattress.
